And when playing on Survivalist, having all of your progress reset and having the islands reset and change with you can put a damper on your experience. The ability to have no two playthroughs be the same is definitely interesting, however, it means you ’ll end up traversing the same themed islands over and over trying to find similar materials, and activating the same ruins/shrines. One of the game ’s biggest strengths (its use of procedural generation) is also one of its biggest weaknesses. Survivalist does offer a much heartier challenge, as it means any mistake could result in an entire retry, but neither offer any reason to pick one over the other, given the entire game can be completed without making any modifications to any of your equipment, and the game ’s overall difficulty is mainly caused from procedurally generated cliffs and strange enemy AI. Storyteller allows you to resume from any checkpoint you ’ve reached along the story, while Survivalist sends you back to the very beginning of the game should you die at any point. … As Deep as a PuddleWhen the game begins, it gives you the option of picking from two difficulty levels, “Survivalist ” and “Storyteller ”. Despite extremely generic combat, the amount of effort you put into upgrading could potentially make said enemy encounters easy or very white-knuckle, and upgrading your stamina will allow you to be less reliant on grinding. WINDBOUND CHAPTER 3 MAP SERIESYou ’re given a series of islands that change every time you play, each with different levels of flora and fauna to collect/encounter, and you ’re on a quest to traverse the islands and make your way back.Īlong the way on your adventure, you have the ability to make changes to your character or materials as a whole, such as building up your arsenal of weapons to help make world traversal and enemy encounters easier, or making adjustments to your boat to allow for the ability to travel longer distances. While not as in depth as the Nintendo juggernaut, it does offer its own take on the similar formula, with ruins to explore, seas to traverse, and a similar (albeit not as refined) level of combat. However, despite the great introduction, the game appears to hit a creative roadblock once the tutorial begins, and you are thrust headfirst into a world of complex menus, crafting, and twitchy combat on a mission to find your way around the beautiful yet barren islands.Īs Wide As An Ocean.As chapter one starts, you ’re treated to an art style and gameplay formula very reminiscent to the Legend of Zelda series. Do this technique a few times and you shouldn’t have any problem taking down Gloomharrow.From the moment it begins, Windbound starts off strong with beautiful visuals and an engagingly thematic cutscene that explains your backstory. If you dodge the attack, respond with an attack of your own and it will vanish again. When it reappears wait for the audio cue, a kind of growl, and the dodge. Stay within melee range if you’re using a Spear. If you are too far for a bit, it will launch a tongue attack. If you are in close range it will roar and then attempt to bite you. It will vanish after each hit and reappear nearby. However, a skill combatant can take it down in melee with a Bone Spear. A few well placed headshots with a bow from a distance is the best way to take down the Gloomharrow. It can be a tough fight if you’re not prepared. Just be sure to explore all of the islands you see, including those that don’t have the keys for objectives. They are quite common from Chapter 3 onwards so you will come across one or two during your travels. While it may be available previously, Chapter 3 onward is the only location we’ve found that is guaranteed to feature a Gloomharrow enemy. ![]()
